Texas Ranch Battery Sizing Guide

A practical guide to matching 48V inverters and lithium batteries to real Texas ranch and farm loads: well pumps, freezers, gates, HVAC, shops, cameras, and multi-day outage planning. Commercial and industrial projects now have a separate C&I storage page.

Solar recharge matters. Batteries carry the outage; solar and generator inputs decide how long the system can keep going.
Three numbers size every system: (1) your biggest motor / surge load sets the inverter kW, (2) how many hours you must ride through sets the battery kWh, and (3) whether you need to recharge during a multi-day outage decides solar and/or generator.

Split-phase is standard

Well pumps, irrigation, welders, and central AC are 120/240V. Every inverter we quote is true 120/240V split-phase, 60Hz.

Surge

Well-pump startup

Submersible pumps draw 4–6x their running current at startup. We size for surge and battery current, not just average kW.

Multi-day outage risk

Texas runs an islanded grid. Winter storms and summer peaks have caused multi-day outages, so ride-through and recharge matter.

Heat

Derating above 113°F

All three inverters derate above 113°F (45°C). Barns and sheds get hotter than that — install shaded, ventilated, or conditioned.

Cold

Winter charge cutoff

LiFePO4 cannot charge below 32°F (0°C). In a hard freeze, an unheated battery can discharge but not refill until warmed.

Ventilation and water

In summer heat, barn ventilation and stock water are life-safety loads. They are often the strongest reason to back up at all.

Scaling up: use the right certified package

You are not capped at one inverter. For homes and smaller ranch loads, split-phase systems can expand by adding matched inverters and battery stacks. For real C&I work, use the separate commercial storage page instead of stretching a ranch system beyond its clean paperwork path. Megarevo's own Texas case uses two R8KLNA units for a 16kW / 20kWh system.

How to size in three steps

This is the same logic we use on every quote.

Step 1

Biggest motor → kW

Freezers and small pumps only → 8kW. Central AC plus well pump → 10–11.5kW. Multiple big motors → parallel.

Step 2

Ride-through → kWh

Critical loads for a day ≈ 15–20 kWh. A whole home for 1–2 days ≈ 30–40 kWh. Scale battery sets from there.

Step 3

Recharge → solar / gen

Short outages → battery only. Multi-day, Uri-style → add solar (Path C) or a confirmed generator-charging path.

Hoymiles & Growatt

Hoymiles LB-10D and Growatt SPH + ALP serve residential / light-commercial certified jobs. C&I jobs are handled through the separate WIT + APX ESS page.

Multi-day

Generator support must match the model

Growatt and Megarevo list diesel-generator charging. Hoymiles generator integration should be confirmed against the current manual before quote.

Winter

No charging below 32°F

Protect batteries in a heated or insulated enclosure, or use self-heating units, so a hard freeze does not block recharge.

Pump surge

VT48100 paperwork pending

For pump-heavy value jobs, confirm surge headroom and consider a soft starter. The Vestwoods VT48100 datasheet / UN38.3 file is still being sourced.

Commercial scale

Permits and stamped drawings

Tens of kW / hundreds of kWh usually means commercial interconnection, exact UL9540 system certification, utility coordination, and stamped engineering drawings.

Heat

Install for Texas summers

Size with derating headroom above 113°F and keep inverters and batteries shaded, ventilated, or in a conditioned room.
