Pump details that change the system

Well pump backup is sized from the pump outward. The same battery bank can behave very differently depending on the motor, controls, and water system.

Phase

Single-phase or three-phase

Single-phase pumps are common on residential and ranch wells. Three-phase pumps are more common on larger agricultural, commercial, or high-flow systems and require a different electrical review.

How do I know if my pump is single-phase or three-phase?

Check the pump nameplate, control box, disconnect, or service panel. If the label is unclear, send photos before quoting. Phase matters because it affects inverter compatibility and field wiring.

Can you size the system from horsepower only?

No. Horsepower helps identify the rough class of the pump, but voltage, running amps, startup current, and control method decide whether the inverter can start the motor reliably.

Why does starting current matter so much?

Many pumps pull a short burst of current when the motor starts. If the inverter cannot support that surge, the system may fault even when the battery has enough stored energy.

Does a pressure tank help battery runtime?

It can. A properly working pressure tank can reduce short cycling and lower how often the pump starts. The actual benefit depends on tank size, pressure settings, leaks, and water-use pattern.

Should I choose battery-only or battery plus generator?

Battery-only can fit selected loads and shorter outages. Battery plus generator is usually better for long outages, high-horsepower pumps, or sites that also need other ranch loads during storms.

What should a customer send first?
